The song was released in 1997 as the lead single from her fourteenth studio album of the same name, which came out in 1999. The album was a massive commercial success, selling over 530,000 copies in South Africa and earning 11x Platinum certification by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA). Nomakanjani also won the best-selling album award and Song of the Year at the South African Music Awards in 2000.

The song is a catchy and upbeat kwaito track that showcases Fassie’s powerful vocals and charismatic personality. Kwaito is a genre of music that emerged in South Africa in the 1990s, blending elements of house music, hip hop, reggae and traditional African rhythms. The song’s title means “What’s up?” or “What’s going on?” in Zulu, and the lyrics are about Fassie’s defiant attitude towards her critics and haters. She sings that she will not let anyone bring her down or stop her from living her life, no matter what they say or do. She also expresses her love and gratitude for her fans, who support her through thick and thin.

The song has become a classic and iconic hit in South Africa and beyond, inspiring many artists and listeners with its message of resilience, empowerment and joy. BRENDA FASSIE – Nomakanjani is not only a song, but also a reflection of Fassie’s life and legacy. Fassie was born in 1964 in Langa, a township near Cape Town, and started singing at an early age. She moved to Johannesburg at the age of 16 to pursue her music career, and soon became a star in the South African music scene. She was known for her bold and controversial style, both on and off stage, as well as her outspokenness on social and political issues. She was also a pioneer in breaking racial and gender barriers in the music industry, and became an icon for the black and LGBTQ+ communities in South Africa and beyond.

However, Fassie also faced many challenges and struggles in her personal life. She battled with drug addiction, domestic violence, health problems and financial troubles. She also lost her only son, Bongani, in a car accident in 2005. She died in 2004 at the age of 39, after suffering a cardiac arrest caused by a cocaine overdose. Her funeral was attended by thousands of fans and dignitaries, who paid tribute to her as a national hero and a cultural legend.
