Shalawat Asyghil: A Powerful Prayer for Peace and Protection

Shalawat Asyghil is a form of prayer that invokes blessings and peace upon Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his family. It also asks Allah to distract the oppressors with each other and to save the believers from their harm. Shalawat Asyghil was composed by Imam Ja’far Ash-Shadiq, the sixth Imam of the Shia Muslims and a descendant of the Prophet. He lived in a time of persecution and tyranny by the Umayyad dynasty, especially under the rule of Yazid bin Muawiyyah, who was responsible for the massacre of Karbala.

Shalawat Asyghil has many benefits and virtues for those who recite it regularly. It is said that it can protect one from the evil eye, envy, calamities, diseases, and enemies. It can also bring peace, tranquility, prosperity, and happiness to one’s life. It can also increase one’s love for the Prophet and his family, and strengthen one’s faith and devotion to Allah.

The Arabic text of Shalawat Asyghil is as follows:

    اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَي سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ
    وَأَشْغِلِ الظَّالِمِيْنَ بِالظَّالِمِيْنَ
    وَأَخْرِجْنَا مِنْ بَيْنِهِمْ سَالِمِيْنَ
    وَعَلَي الِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ أَجْمَعِيْنَ

The transliteration of Shalawat Asyghil is as follows:

    Allahumma sholli ‘ala Sayyidina Muhammad
    wa asyghilizh zholimin bidz zholimin
    wa akhrijna min bainihim salimin
wa ‘ala alihi wa shohbihi ajma’in

The translation of Shalawat Asyghil is as follows:

O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad
And distract the oppressors with each other
And save us from among them safely
And upon his family and companions all together

Shalawat Asyghil has been recited by many Muslims throughout history, especially in times of hardship and oppression. It has also been arranged into various musical compositions by different artists, such as Addie MS, a famous Indonesian composer and conductor. He created a symphonic version of Shalawat Asyghil for the celebration of the second century of Nahdlatul Ulama, the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia. He said that he was moved to tears while writing the arrangement, as he felt a deep connection with the prayer and its message.

Shalawat Asyghil is a powerful reminder of the importance of praying for the Prophet and his family, and seeking their intercession and guidance. It is also a way of expressing solidarity with the oppressed and persecuted people around the world, and asking Allah to grant them relief and justice. It is a prayer that can inspire hope, courage, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Shalawat Asyghil is one of the many forms of shalawat that Muslims can recite to show their love and respect for the Prophet and his family. Shalawat is a plural form of salat, which means “prayer” or “salutation” in Arabic. Shalawat has many benefits and rewards for the believers, as it is a way of following the command of Allah and the example of the Prophet.

    Allah says in the Quran:

    إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ۚ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا
Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace. (Quran 33:56)

    The Prophet also said:

من صلى علي حين يصبح وحين يمسي أدركته شفاعتي يوم القيامة
Whoever sends blessings upon me in the morning and in the evening, my intercession will reach him on the Day of Resurrection. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

There are many forms of shalawat that Muslims can recite, depending on their preference and intention. Some of the most common and popular forms are:

    • Shalawat Ibrahimiyah: This is the form that is recited during the tashahhud in every prayer. It is based on the way that Allah instructed Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to pray for himself and his family.
    • Shalawat al-Nariyah: This is also known as Shalawat al-Tafrijiyah or Shalawat al-Qabtiyah. It is a form of shalawat that asks Allah to relieve the distress and difficulties of the Muslims, and to grant them victory and success.
    • Shalawat al-Fatih: This is a form of shalawat that praises the Prophet as the opener of what was closed, the seal of what preceded, and the helper of truth by truth. It is said that whoever recites it once will receive the reward of reciting all other forms of shalawat.
    • Shalawat al-Badawiyyah: This is a form of shalawat that was composed by Imam al-Badawi, a famous Egyptian scholar and saint. It is a long and comprehensive form of shalawat that covers all aspects of the Prophet’s life and attributes.
    • Shalawat al-Kubra: This is a form of shalawat that was composed by Imam al-Jazuli, a famous Moroccan scholar and saint. It is a very long and elaborate form of shalawat that contains many praises and supplications for the Prophet and his family.

These are just some examples of the forms of shalawat that Muslims can recite to express their love and devotion for the Prophet and his family. There are many other forms that have been composed by various scholars, saints, poets, and lovers of the Prophet throughout history. The main thing is to recite them with sincerity, humility, and gratitude, and to follow them with good deeds and manners.
