Harry’s uncle Vernon tries to prevent him from reading the letters, but they keep arriving in larger numbers. Finally, he takes his family and Harry to a secluded island, hoping to escape the letters. However, on Harry’s birthday, a giant named Hagrid breaks into the hut and delivers the letter to Harry personally. He tells Harry that he is a wizard and that he has been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He also reveals that Harry’s parents were killed by the evil Lord Voldemort, who tried to kill Harry as well but failed, leaving him with a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead.

Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley, a hidden street in London where wizards and witches buy their supplies. There, Harry gets his wand, his school uniform, and his textbooks. He also meets Professor Quirrell, the Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. Hagrid also buys Harry a pet owl, which he names Hedwig, as a birthday present. He also tells Harry about Gringotts, the wizarding bank, where he withdraws some money for Harry and takes out a mysterious package from vault 713.

Harry then boards the Hogwarts Express, a train that takes him to Hogwarts. On the train, he meets Ron Weasley, a boy from a poor but pure-blood wizarding family, and Hermione Granger, a girl who is very smart but has Muggle (non-magical) parents. He also encounters Draco Malfoy, a boy from a rich and arrogant pure-blood family, who offers to be his friend but insults Ron and Hermione. Harry rejects Draco’s offer and makes an enemy of him.

At Hogwarts, Harry and the other first-year students are sorted into one of four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. The Sorting Hat, a magical hat that can read their minds, places Harry in Gryffindor, along with Ron and Hermione. Draco is sorted into Slytherin, the house of Voldemort and his followers.

Harry begins his classes at Hogwarts and learns about various aspects of magic. He excels at flying on a broomstick and is recruited by Oliver Wood, the captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team, as a Seeker. Quidditch is a popular sport among wizards that involves flying on broomsticks and scoring points by throwing balls through hoops or catching a small golden ball called the Snitch.

Harry also discovers that there is something hidden under a trapdoor in the third-floor corridor, guarded by a three-headed dog named Fluffy. He suspects that it has something to do with the package that Hagrid took from Gringotts. He also learns that Voldemort is still alive and is looking for something that can help him regain his power.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione become friends after they save each other from various dangers. They also face several challenges from their teachers, their rivals, and their own curiosity. They encounter a troll in the girls’ bathroom, a giant chessboard with living pieces, a plant that strangles people who touch it, and a mirror that shows their deepest desires.

They eventually find out that the thing under the trapdoor is the Philosopher’s Stone (or Sorcerer’s Stone in some editions), a legendary object that can turn any metal into gold and produce the Elixir of Life, which grants immortality. They also realize that someone is trying to steal it for Voldemort. They suspect that it is Professor Snape, who seems to hate Harry and who was seen trying to curse him during a Quidditch match.

They decide to go through the trapdoor themselves and stop the thief before it is too late. They manage to get past Fluffy and the other obstacles with their skills and courage. However, they are shocked to discover that the real culprit is not Snape but Quirrell, who has been possessed by Voldemort’s spirit. Voldemort orders Quirrell to kill Harry and get the stone from him.

Harry fights back with all his strength and manages to touch Quirrell’s face, which burns him because of Harry’s mother’s love that protects him. Quirrell collapses and Voldemort’s spirit flees. Harry passes out and wakes up in the hospital wing with Dumbledore by his side.

Dumbledore explains that he had gone to London to stop Voldemort from stealing the stone but returned in time
