R. City, also known as Rock City and Planet VI, is a songwriting and record production duo from Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The duo consists of brothers Theron and Timothy Thomas, who are also singers and rappers. They are best known for their hit single “Locked Away” featuring Adam Levine, which peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 2015.
The duo started their career in 2003, writing songs for artists such as Akon, Rihanna, Sean Kingston, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Usher and more. They also released several mixtapes under the name Planet VI, showcasing their own musical style influenced by reggae, hip hop and pop. In 2011, they signed a record deal with Kemosabe Records, a label founded by Dr. Luke, and changed their name to R. City.
In 2015, they released their debut studio album What Dreams Are Made Of, which featured collaborations with Akon, T.I., Beenie Man and more. The album spawned the singles “I’m That…”, “Make Up” and “Locked Away”. The latter song became their breakthrough hit, reaching the top ten in several countries and receiving over 950 million views on YouTube. The song is a catchy pop ballad that asks the question: “If I got locked away and we lost it all today, tell me honestly, would you still love me the same?”
R. City continues to write and produce songs for other artists, such as Jason Derulo, Pitbull, Kelly Clarkson and more. They also release their own music independently, such as the singles “Nobody’s Ready”, “Fete You” and “Crazy Love”. They are currently working on their second studio album.
According to their Wikipedia page, R. City has not released a second studio album yet, but they have been working on new music since 2016. They have also hinted at a possible collaboration with Ed Sheeran on their Instagram account in 2017.
In an interview with Billboard in 2015, R. City said that they wanted their second album to be more diverse and experimental than their first one. They said that they wanted to explore different genres and sounds, such as rock, reggae, dancehall and pop. They also said that they wanted to feature more artists from their home island of Saint Thomas, such as Pressure Busspipe and Verse Simmonds.
As of 2021, R. City has not announced a release date or a title for their second album, but they have released some singles and EPs independently, such as “Freak Her to Keep Her”, “Nobody’s Ready”, “Crazy Love” and “Our Time”. They have also continued to write and produce songs for other artists, such as Jason Derulo, Pitbull, Kelly Clarkson and more.
R. City has been praised for their versatility and creativity as songwriters and producers, as well as their vocal and rap skills as artists. They have also been recognized for their positive and inspirational messages in their songs, such as “Live by the Gun”, “Save My Soul” and “Our Time”.
However, R. City has also faced some challenges and setbacks in their career, such as label issues, album delays, piracy and lack of promotion. They have also dealt with personal struggles, such as losing their father to cancer in 2014 and surviving Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Despite these difficulties, R. City has remained optimistic and determined to achieve their dreams. They have said that they want to be remembered as one of the greatest songwriting and production duos of all time, and also as ambassadors for their island and culture. They have also expressed their desire to collaborate with more artists from different genres and backgrounds, such as Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, Drake and more.
